Description - The Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) is the Swiss reference laboratory for the diagnosis, surveillance and control of highly contagious animal diseases and the approval body for vaccines and sera for animals. Since 1992, the IVI has been op erating laboratories with biological safety levels 2, 3 and 4 (BSL) at the Mittelhäusen site. It is the only corresponding laboratory in Switzerland in which highly contagious animal diseases (e.g. foot-and-mouth disease or swine fever) can be diagnosed and researched.
